Richard Sibley English Sterling Silver Georgian 1814 Tray

Richard Sibley, English sterling silver Georgian tray from 1814 with a gadrooned rim, with handles adorned with stylized natural motifs, standing on 4 feet.  It measures 26 1/2'' in length from handle to handle (22 1/4'' excluding the handles) by 16'' in width by 2 1/4'' in height, weighs an impressive 113.6 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.

Richard Sibley collaborated with William Burwash in the early 1800s. William Burwash & Richard Sibley registered their partnership mark on 7 October 1805. He registered his own mark in 1812. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a Richard Sibley plateau in its commission and states that it was "made for presentation to Sir Arthur Wellesley, duke of Wellington (1769–1852), the victor of the war against the Napoleonic armies that invaded Portugal and Spain (the Peninsular War, 1808–14) ... on the order of the regent of Portugal John VI.'' The White House owns 2 ewers by Richard Sibley, and the British Museum also owns a salver by him. His pieces have been sold at prestigious auctions including Christie's and Sotheby's. Arthur Grimwade in his seminal book " London Goldsmiths 1697-1837: Their Marks & Lives," asserts that Sibley's work "whether alone or in partnership is of a high standard of design and execution in a restrained key of Regency taste".
