William Bateman, English sterling silver two-handled tray, made in London in 1815 during the Georgian era, engraved with a coat of arms as well as other motifs, adorned with a gadrooned rim and scroll border. It measures 27'' from handle to handle (22'' excluding the handles) by 16'' in width by 2 1/4'' in height, weighs an impressive 118 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.

The Bateman family are the most famous silversmiths of the Georgian era. The lineage was started by Hester Bateman in 1761. William was second son of Jonathan and Ann Bateman and the grandson of Hester. In 1834 silver commissions for the great royal retail firm Rundell, Bridge & Rundell were carried out by the grand scale manufacturing establishment run by William Bateman junior who was the great-grandson of Hester Bateman and the firm effectively became royal silversmiths to King William IV.
