W. Bateman English 1816 Georgian Sterling Silver Platter Tray
William Bateman, English sterling silver platter tray, made in London in 1816 during the Georgian era, with a gadrooned and shell border, engraved with noble coat of arms. It measures 20'' in length by 15 1/4'' in depth by 1 1/3'' in height, weighs 81.7 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.
The Bateman family are the most famous silversmiths of the Georgian era. The lineage was started by Hester Bateman in 1761. William was second son of Jonathan and Ann Bateman and the grandson of Hester. In 1834 silver commissions for the great royal retail firm Rundell, Bridge & Rundell were carried out by the grand scale manufacturing establishment run by William Bateman junior who was the great-grandson of Hester Bateman and the firm effectively became royal silversmiths to King William IV.
