Wood & Hughes Sterling Silver 19th Century Bowl/Basket in Neoclassical Style
Wood & Hughes sterling silver basket or bowl with a fixed handle, showcasing an elegant design, with female faces on either end as well as stylized motifs on the handle, in the bowl, and above the base. It measures 13'' from in length by 7'' in width by 9'' in height, weighs 20.2 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks and a monogram as shown.
Wood & Hughes began in 1833 with a partnership between Jacob Wood, William Gale and Jasper Hughes. Both Wood and Hughes had been apprentices under Gale. William Gale was succeeded in the business by his son William Gale Jr. (1825-1885). Some of Gale’s works belong to museum collections, such as those of the Brooklyn Museum. The Gale and the Wood & Hughes firms grew to once be the largest manufacturers of silverware in the U.S.
